I designed a set of interpretive displays and a visitor trail for a landfill located very near my home in Humboldt County, California. This rather picturesque region of the world is heavily dependent upon tourism, so this attraction could create an alternative destination for visitors usually accustomed to the more authentically natural spectacles common to the area. The trail and displays will reveal the many distinctive features of this landfill, and will also reveal the varied characteristics of a subterranean plume of contaminated groundwater that migrates from the site. These plume displays reveal the depth, chemical composition, and geographic location of this invisible yet compelling occurrence.
